Hahn & Sohn HDV03APRO-E petrol garden wood chipper with electric start

The Hahn & Sohn HDV 03APRO-E petrol wood chipper is suitable for processing branches, wood offcuts, and other organic waste generated during the maintenance of gardens, orchards, parks, or larger properties.

• Power is provided by a Loncin 420 cm³ petrol engine with an output of 9.1 kW and an operating speed of 3,600 rpm. The engine drives the drum chipping mechanism via a pair of V-belts. The cutting system consists of two blades and one opposing support plate, which work together to ensure smooth processing of the material.
• The specified maximum branch diameter is 120 mm. Actual capacity always also depends on the hardness, moisture, shape, and branching of the material. Freshly cut branches are generally easier to process than old and dry wood, which places greater strain on the cutting edges.
• The large feed hopper makes it easier to insert longer and branched pieces. Once engaged by the mechanism, the material is automatically drawn into the chipping unit, so there is no need to force it into the machine. The feed section is fitted with a flexible protective curtain and a prominent handle around the perimeter, which also serves as a safety element.
• Processed wood chips are discharged through a high discharge chute. The chute can be rotated through 360°, and the end deflector allows the discharge direction to be adjusted. The chips can therefore be directed onto a pile, into a wheelbarrow, or into a nearby container.
• Safety during operation is supported by an emergency stop bar and a separate emergency stop button. The belt drive is covered, and the machine is equipped with warning symbols indicating the need to use protective equipment and maintain a safe distance.
• For stable operation, the chipper is fitted with wide tubeless tyres and a front support leg. The tow bar with coupling device allows practical movement of the machine within private property or a closed worksite. The machine is not intended for towing on public roads.

PRACTICAL TIP

Insert branches into the hopper with the thicker cut end first. If they are heavily branched, it is worth shortening some side branches beforehand. If the engine speed begins to drop, stop feeding material and wait until the engine returns to full operating speed.

USE / INSTALLATION / OPERATION

Suitable use

The chipper is designed for processing suitable organic material, for example:

• branches,
• shoots,
• stems,
• vines,
• leafy garden waste,
• roots free of soil,
• other suitable plant material.

Do not insert stones, soil, sand, metal objects, or other foreign materials into the machine. These contaminants may damage the blades and internal mechanism.

Assembly before first use

The machine is supplied partially assembled. According to the manual, the following parts in particular must be installed:

• feed hopper,
• discharge chute,
• wheels,
• tow bar,
• relevant connecting components.

After assembly, check that all parts are correctly seated and all bolted connections are properly tightened.

Before starting

• Place the machine on a solid, level, and stable surface.
• Check the condition of the blades, belts, and protective covers.
• Check the tightness of all bolts and nuts.
• Check tyre pressure.
• Add the specified engine oil.
• Fill the fuel tank with suitable petrol.
• Set the discharge chute in the desired direction.
• Use safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and sturdy footwear.

The engine is supplied without oil and must not be started before oil is added.

Basic operation

1. Make sure the chipping mechanism drive is disengaged before starting.
2. Open the fuel valve.
3. When the engine is cold, set the choke to the starting position.
4. Start the engine using the electric or manual starter.
5. Allow the engine to warm up.
6. Gradually increase the engine speed.
7. Slowly and smoothly engage the drum drive.
8. Feed material gradually and allow it to be drawn in automatically.
9. Do not overload the machine with too much material.
10. Before shutting down, reduce the engine speed and allow the engine to idle briefly.
11. Switch off the engine and close the fuel supply.

Safety during operation

• Do not put hands or feet into the feed hopper or discharge chute.
• Keep other people and animals at a safe distance.
• Use the machine only outdoors or in a very well-ventilated area.
• Do not operate it without the protective covers installed.
• Clear blockages only after all moving parts have come to a complete stop.
• Disconnect the spark plug cable before maintenance.
• Do not tilt the machine while it is running.
• Do not operate it on concrete or another hard surface.
• Use the tow bar only for movement within a closed area, not on public roads.

Maintenance

Before each use, check:

• engine oil level,
• overall technical condition,
• free movement of the drum,
• condition and sharpness of the blades,
• tightness of connecting components.

Also regularly check belt tension, tyre condition, the spark plug, and the air filter. It is advisable to lightly lubricate the bearings after the first few hours of operation. Do not use a high-pressure cleaner for cleaning.
