The air filter is the engine's first line of defence. During operation, a diesel generator draws in a huge volume of air, and any dust that enters acts as an abrasive on the cylinder walls, piston rings, and fuel injection system. This is why the air filter is one of the most important consumable parts on stationary machines that often operate in dusty environments such as construction sites or agricultural applications.

• The filter has a flat panel design with a large surface area of pleated filter paper. Folding the paper into pleats increases the filtration area without requiring additional installation space, allowing the filter to capture more impurities than its external dimensions would suggest. Around the perimeter is a plastic frame with a sealing surface, ensuring that all intake air passes through the filter medium rather than bypassing it around the edges.
• The filter is designed for three Hahn & Sohn diesel generator models. The HDE 15000EA3 and HDE 15000SA3 are equipped with a twin-cylinder engine with a displacement of 997 cm³ and an output of 11-12 kW; they differ only in their design, with an open frame versus a soundproofed enclosure. The HDE 18000SA3 has a twin-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1247 cm³ and an output of 14-15 kW. All three operate at 3000 rpm on diesel fuel compliant with EN 590.

PRACTICAL TIP

Do not knock the filter out or blow it with compressed air from the outside inwards. Pressurised air can tear the fine structure of the paper, and although the filter may then look clean, dust can pass through it into the engine. If you need to temporarily remove coarse dirt from the filter, tap it lightly against your palm and replace it with a new one at the earliest opportunity.

USE / INSTALLATION / OPERATION

1. Switch off the generator and allow the engine to cool.
2. Open the filter housing cover and remove the old filter.
3. Wipe the inside of the filter housing with a damp cloth so that no settled dust remains. Never blow out the housing with compressed air while the filter is installed.
4. Insert the new filter so that the sealing frame sits evenly around the entire perimeter without any folds or distortion.
5. Close the cover and check that it sits evenly and is securely fastened.
6. Record the replacement date in the machine's service documentation, ideally together with the engine hour reading.

Never operate the generator without an air filter or with a damaged filter. Even brief operation without filtration allows dust to enter the cylinders and can cause permanent engine damage.
